Distribution

STATUS: A common species, mainly at lower altitudes. In New Guinea the dark forms are dominantly abundant. Some females are deep black with a bright white but narrow transverse band across both wings (f. leucotaenia). At the Islands in the Cenderawasih Bay the form with a broader band are more common (f. meforensis). The species replaces in the Wallacean region the Sundanian species Erebus ephesperis (Hübner, 1827). Both species are very similar but are in males easy distinguished by the irregular oblique band from base to eyespot in E. crepuscularis, while in E. ephesperis this band is straight. The white bar at the outside of the eyespot in males is in crepuscularis narrow and sharp, while in ephesperis this bar is broad and fading out. A few specimens from crepuscularis are known from Java, ephesperis has never been found on New Guinea.
