The Papua Insects Foundation
The Leafhoppers (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha) of Papua Indonesia
by Carl Schulz (†)
Leafhoppers are the smaller cicadas of this order. They don't produce sounds like their bigger "brothers", the Singing Cicadas. Larvae of the Singing Cicadas live in the ground, while most of the immature stages of Leafhoppers live above the ground, on vegetation, sometimes protected by blotches of foam (Cicadellidae). In Papua the Leafhoppers are represented by the superfamilies Fulgoroidea (Planthoppers), Cercopoidea Froghoppers or Spittlebugs), Cicadelloidea (True Leafhoppers) and Membracoidea (Treehoppers).
The checklist is based on all relevant literature and additional collection records.
