The Singing Cicadas (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae & Tibicinidae) of Papua Indonesia
by Hans Duffels, Arnold de Boer & Marieke Schouten (†)
Visiting the tropical rain forest of Papua will always be remembered by the striking and, after a while, familiar sound of singing cicadas. This pulsing, sharp and loud "noise" can be heard in daytime and at twilight. The sound is produced by the males through large hollow "tymbal" organs. Other families, particularly the very small leaf cicadas, do not produce any sound. Larger species are sometimes eaten by the local people. More general information can be found on the webpage of Dr. Hans Duffels.
In many cases the adults hatch simultaneously in high numbers. At that event the trees are suddenly full of exuvia, like here in Wamena (Baliem Valley, 1993) (Photos: Rob de Vos)

The Cicadidae and Tibicinidae are the so called "singing cicadas"; usually large species which produce sound.
The checklist is based on all relevant literature and additional collection records.
