The Hawkmoths (SPHINGIDAE, Macroglossinae) of Papua Indonesia
by Willem Hogenes
Macroglossum lineatum Lucas, 1891 [stat. nov.]
This taxon is treated here as bona species and not as subspecies of Macroglossum prometheus Boisduval, since there is proof that both are indeed separated. The genitalia of both taxa are different and there is a gap in the distribution area of both.
STATUS: Widely distributed in New Guinea and rather common.
PAPUA LOCALITIES: Moor & Mambor Islands: Hariti, Moor, Ratewi; New Guinea: Jayapura, Mapia (Kobowre Mts.*), Sorong, Tami River. Details in gazetteer.
EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION: Timor, Kai Islands, Papua New Guinea, North and East Australia.
DATA SOURCES: KSP, RMNH, ZMAN, Website Sphingidae of Southeast Asia.
* note: On the distribution maps of "Sphingidae of Southeast Asia" we noticed frequently marks on the Mapia Islands, North of Numfor. By experience in collections, however, we think this is a misunderstanding and this should be the village Mapia, Southeast of Nabire in the Kobowre Mountains, which is much more often visited by collectors.
