The Hawkmoths (SPHINGIDAE, Macroglossinae) of Papua Indonesia

by Willem Hogenes

Macroglossum papuanum Rothschild & Jordan, 1903 [stat. nov.]

Taxonomical note

This taxon is treated here as bona species and not as subspecies of Macroglossum insipida Butler, 1875 since there is proof that both are indeed separated. The genitalia of both taxa are different and there is a gap in the distribution area of both.

Distribution

STATUS: Widely distributed in New Guinea but not very common.

PAPUA LOCALITIES: Waigeo; Salawati; New Guinea: Digul District, Jayapura, Mapia (Kobowre Mts.*), Pionierbivak, Sorong. Details in gazetteer.

EXTERNAL DISTRIBUTION: Papua New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, North Queensland (Australia).

DATA SOURCES: KSP, RMNH. Website Sphingidae of Southeast Asia.

* note: On the distribution maps of "Sphingidae of Southeast Asia" we noticed frequently marks on the Mapia Islands, North of Numfor. By experience in collections, however, we think this is a misunderstanding and this should be the village Mapia, Southeast of Nabire in the Kobowre Mountains, which is much more often visited by collectors.
