The Goat Moths (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) of Papua Indonesia

by Rob de Vos

Zeuzera reticulata Joicey & Talbot, 1916

synonym:
buergersi Gaede, 1933

Note

Females are much larger and relatively rare compared to the small and very abundant males. The dark speckles on the wings are in females metallic greenish rather than the metallic blue or black speckles in the males. This species can be easily distinguished from the similar Zeuzera conferta Walker, 1856 by the legs being almost unicoloured blackish in reticulata and alternately black and brown banded in conferta.

Distribution

STATUS: One of the most common Zeuzera species in New Guinea which occassionally is a pest in coffee plantages, but also in tea, cotton, cocoa, kapok, coca and teak. In lowland as well as mountainous areas. Outside New Guinea the even more abundant and similar Zeuzera coffeae Nietner, 1861 occurs, also a species causing severe pests in coffee plantages. Yakovlev (2011b) places this species in the genus Polyphagozerra Yakovlev, 2011. For the time being this is not followed here because some other specialists have comments on his splitting the genus Zeuzera into 7 (new) genera, until more clearity has been presented.
