The Ghost Moths (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) of Papua Indonesia

Oxycanus nigra (Viette, 1956)

[Paraoxycanus nigra Viette, 1956] (TL: Scree Valley Camp, Dutch New Guinea; type: RMNH)

endemic species


There is some minor variation in forewing pattern. The species has some resemblance with Oxycanus herbuloti but is much darker, particularly the dark hindwings are diagnostic. The male genitalia are depicted in the left figure.








STATUS: A local and rare species.

PAPUA LOCALITIES: New Guinea: Letterbox Camp, Scree Valley Camp, Mt. Wilhelmina (Gn. Trikora). Details in gazetteer.
